REAL ID in Washington: What You Need to Know Before You Fly in 2025

Starting May 7, 2025, the federal government will begin enforcing REAL ID requirements at airports and certain federal facilities. For Washington State residents, this means that your standard driver’s license may no longer be enough to board domestic flights or access military bases and federal buildings.

At the Law Office of Erin Bradley McAleer, we want to ensure Washington residents are fully informed—and prepared—for this important transition.

What Is REAL ID?

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 as part of a broader effort to improve national security. It sets stricter identification standards for state-issued IDs like driver’s licenses. Starting in May 2025, only REAL ID-compliant IDs or accepted alternatives will be allowed for certain federal purposes.

This includes:

  • Boarding commercial domestic flights
  • Entering federal buildings and courthouses
  • Accessing military bases

What Does a REAL ID Look Like in Washington?

In Washington, residents have two main options:

  1. Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) – Already meets REAL ID requirements and marked with an American flag.
  2. Standard License – Not compliant. Starting May 7, 2025, it won’t be accepted at TSA checkpoints unless paired with another form of acceptable ID (e.g., passport).

If your current license is not enhanced, you’ll need to apply for an EDL or carry a valid passport to fly.

How to Get a REAL ID-Compliant License in Washington

To apply for an Enhanced Driver’s License, you’ll need to:

  • Visit a DOL office in person (not available online)
  • Bring proof of identity, citizenship, Social Security number, and residence in Washington
  • Pay an additional fee (as of now, $15 more than a standard license)

Appointments may be required, and processing times can vary—so early action is key.

Some Washington residents have raised concerns about:

  • Privacy – REAL ID licenses require more documentation and may be viewed as intrusive.
  • Access – Individuals experiencing homelessness or without certain documents may face barriers.
  • Immigration Status – Undocumented immigrants can still receive a standard Washington license, but not a REAL ID.

If you’re unsure about how your legal status or documentation affects your eligibility, our office can help guide you through your options safely and legally.

Don’t Wait—Prepare Now

Thousands of Washingtonians still carry standard licenses that won’t meet the new requirements. If you plan to fly for business, family, or emergencies in the coming year, act now to avoid last-minute stress or denied boarding at the airport.
